One Day Workshop • Painting with Earth-Based Pigments: Basic Carbon Blacks – Lamp, Bone and Vine Designed for Beginners to Advanced • Instructor: Laura Miner Painting with Earth Pigments is a hands-on course using forged and natural earth materials to make art pigments. Learn to prepare carbon black pigments (lamp, bone and vine) and process each of them into a watercolor and oil paint. With your hand-crafted paints, experiment and create one watercolor and one oil painting to take home. This class combines history, science, art and fun. NOTE: This class does not teach drawing or painting techniques; however, no experience is necessary to take the class. The paints created can be used by beginner through advanced artists. The class is eco-friendly and non-toxic. Walnut oil will be used as the medium. CLASS LIMIT: 8 Instructor will supply the raw materials for the pigments, pigment making equipment, and painting surfaces. STUDENT SUPPLY LIST: (list will be emailed upon registration) • Mortar and Pestle for grinding, at least 3.5” in diameter. These are usually sold as kitchenware for spices and herbs, costs range from $10-15. • An Xacto knife or similar for scraping pigments. • A palette knife or knives for mixing paints. Large multi-edge scrapper works well but is not required. • Rags/cloth for wiping hands, tools, and glass. Apron or smock is optional. • Your choice of watercolor and/or oil brushes for painting.

For Classes: 90% refund for cancellation up until one week before start date, then 50% up until the end of the first class. For Workshops: 90% refund for cancellation up until one week before start date; 50% up until the end of the day before workshop begins and no refunds day of workshop.
